Today I wrote a difficult letter. . . yet moments after I pressed send, I was flooded with replies of support and love. . . so much beauty.
If you have not visited our studio--do. Come and practice. We are still here. We are still practicing. The geography may change; the practice will continue.
Whether you have practiced with us once, occasionally, or almost daily. . . please know that Yoga Body Space was created for you to begin, re-start, or continue your journey in Yoga.
What sparked that creation? In September 2014 I joined one of my teachers on a retreat to India as a continuation of an Advanced Teacher Training that I had undertaken. In those 10-days of deeper study into meditation and the roots and traditions of the Yoga practice, I experienced a shift that forever changed why and how I practice.
I returned to Cape Town, and my home-community of Constantia, longing for a studio where I was free to teach in a manner that resonated with my own vision of the Yoga practice, a studio with multiple teachers, sharing similar intentions, but unique in their approach. A place where we could teach, be taught, and serve the yoga community. Yoga Body Space has grown into just that type of studio--a collective of teachers and practitioners evolving individually and together.
There has been one very big challenge since our doors opened 3 May 2016. . . the rent. It is very high. I took on this space and this rental fee feeling that, with time, we would be able to make ends meet. . . but alas, we have not.
While I was aware that offering yoga taught in a quieter, more personalized and more focused way would not be as lucrative a business model for a commercial studio as some other approaches, I also knew that I had the luxury of never needing to take home a pay check--and I have not. My financial intentions were simple:
Pay my rent on time.
Pay all teachers and management-staff well.
Offer teachers affordable studio rental rates--for offering workshops or working with private clients.
Provide members with high-calibre teaching for an affordable price.
I am proud to have been able to fulfil all of those intentions, and to take up the financial shortfall each month. This time and opportunity of opening and running this studio has been great gift. I have gained and learned so much. However, it is not something that I can continue beyond the end of my lease--31 May 2018. At least not in this location.
I have been in discussions with the landlord for sometime now, trying to appeal to his sense of community service, spouting the benefits of a quiet business that has low-impact on the physical building. . . but he too is simply running a business, and I must respect that.
Yoga Body Space will cease to operate in this location at High Constantia Centre as of Thursday 31 May 2018.
We are looking for space in other locations in the Constantia area, but have had no luck at this time. Your input and ideas are welcome.
PLEASE KNOW all classes will continue as per the current schedule until the end of May.
The teachers and staff remain focused and dedicated to you all and to our community.
We have some exciting workshops and special classes coming up in the next couple of months.
Stay tuned to the website and Facebook page for regular updates.
With tremendous love and gratitude, Allison, and the entire Yoga Body Space Team
