Yin Yoga is a restorative form of yoga—a perfect balance to the more ‘yang’ type classes like Vinyasa and Ashtanga. If you want (or need) to calm and balance your body and mind, this is the class for you. The opposite of a faster moving practice like Vinyasa, Yin yoga poses are held for several minutes at a time. This meditative practice is designed to target your deeper connective tissues and fascia, restoring length and elasticity.
You will use props so that your body can release into the postures instead of actively flexing or engaging the muscles. Like meditation, it may make you feel a bit antsy at first, but stick with it for a few classes and its restorative powers might have you hooked. For a slightly more active, less ‘held’ version of Yin, try the Yin Flow class. Yin is for everyone—in particular, athletes on recovery days, and anyone who struggles with insomnia or anxiety.
